Laminate Peaking

Last Updated: July 2026By Efi Eylor · NWFA Certified Inspector

Laminate peaking occurs when adjacent planks push against each other and buckle upward at the joints, creating raised ridges across the floor. Unlike swelling (which is caused by moisture absorption into the core), peaking is a mechanical issue caused by the floor having nowhere to expand.

Key Takeaways

  • Peaking is caused by insufficient expansion gaps — the floor expands and pushes planks upward at joints
  • Subfloor irregularities (high spots) can force planks into a peaked configuration
  • Transitional obstructions (missing or undersized transition strips) create fixed points that cause peaking
  • Running laminate through too many rooms without expansion breaks concentrates stress
  • A certified inspection measures expansion gaps, subfloor flatness, and transition placement

Frequently Asked Questions

Can swollen laminate be repaired?

No. Once the HDF core has absorbed moisture and swollen, the damage is irreversible. Affected planks must be replaced.

How much does a laminate floor inspection cost?

Our Standard Flooring Inspection starts at $550 and covers laminate flooring. Includes moisture testing, expansion gap measurement, and a written report.
