Your region determines the target MC for hardwood flooring — and the acclimation strategy needed to prevent failures. NWFA Moisture Map

Temperate climate with moderate seasonal humidity swings. This is the baseline for the NWFA/NOFMA 6-9% manufacturing standard. Seasonal humidity control (humidifier in winter, dehumidifier or AC in summer) maintains stable conditions year-round.

Seasonal Variation

Winter heating can drop RH to 15-25%, pushing EMC below 5%. Summer humidity can reach 55-65%, pushing EMC to 10-11%. HVAC humidity control is essential to prevent seasonal movement.

Acclimation Advice

Acclimate for 3-5 days. Ensure HVAC is operating at normal living conditions. Use a humidifier in winter and dehumidifier or AC in summer to maintain 30-50% RH year-round.

Why Season Matters

Seasonal Humidity Swings

Even within a single region, interior humidity swings dramatically between seasons. These swings are the primary cause of seasonal flooring movement — gapping in winter, cupping in summer.

Winter (Heating Season)

When heating systems run, indoor RH drops dramatically — often below 20%. EMC can fall to 4-5% MC, causing wood to shrink, gap between boards, and develop surface checks. This is the #1 cause of seasonal gapping complaints. Whole-home humidification is the primary defense.

Summer (Humid Season)

Ambient humidity rises, especially in the eastern and southern US. Interior RH can exceed 65%, pushing EMC above 12% MC. Wood expands, joints tighten, and cupping can occur. Air conditioning and dehumidification are the primary defenses. This is peak season for cupping failure claims.

Step-by-Step Process

The NWFA Acclimation Process

Proper acclimation is the single most important factor in preventing hardwood floor failures. Follow these six steps from the NWFA Installation Guidelines to ensure your flooring reaches equilibrium before, during, and after installation.

Pre-Delivery Jobsite Evaluation

  • Check and record ambient temperature and relative humidity at the jobsite
  • Check and record subfloor moisture content using a calibrated meter
  • Ensure conditions align with the flooring manufacturer's requirements
  • HVAC must be operational at normal living conditions for at least 5 days prior
  • If conditions are outside manufacturer specs, delay delivery until corrected

Upon Delivery — Flooring Inspection

  • Recheck and record temperature and RH in the space receiving the floor
  • Take MC readings of a minimum of 40 boards per 1,000 sq ft (plus 4 per 100 sq ft thereafter)
  • Use a pin-type meter on the back of boards to avoid face damage
  • Average all readings and document with date and photographs
  • Isolate any boards with unusually high or low readings — do not install them

Upon Delivery — Subfloor Inspection

  • Take MC readings at 20+ locations per 1,000 sq ft (plus 4 per 100 sq ft thereafter)
  • Average all readings and document
  • Wood subfloor MC must be within 4% of strip flooring (<3") or 2% of plank flooring (≥3")
  • Concrete subfloors: test per ASTM F1869 (calcium chloride) and/or ASTM F2170 (in-situ probes)
  • Address any elevated readings before proceeding with installation

Acclimation / Conditioning Period

  • Cross-stack flooring with 3/4" to 1" stickers between each layer
  • Open all packaging completely to allow air circulation on all sides
  • Continue until the flooring MC reaches equilibrium with the environment (typically 3-5 days)
  • Tropical and imported species require 2-3x longer due to density, oils, and interlocking cell structure
  • Re-check MC readings before installation to confirm equilibrium has been reached

Installation

  • Verify flooring MC is within 2% of subfloor MC before beginning
  • Maintain ambient conditions (temperature and RH) throughout installation
  • Continue documenting all readings and conditions
  • Follow the manufacturer's installation method per their specifications
  • For adhesive installations, follow the adhesive manufacturer's open time and trowel requirements

Post-Installation Conditioning

  • Unfinished flooring: allow 5-7 days stabilization before sanding and finishing
  • Adhesive installations: follow manufacturer's off-gassing period before applying finish
  • Maintain HVAC and humidity control throughout and after installation
  • Educate the homeowner on maintaining 30-50% RH and 60-80°F year-round
  • Document final MC readings and provide to the homeowner for warranty records

Subfloor Standards

Subfloor Moisture Requirements

The subfloor is the hidden moisture source behind most flooring failures. NWFA mandates specific testing protocols and MC differentials between the subfloor and finish flooring.

Wood Subfloor — Strip Flooring (<3" wide)

MC within 4% of flooring MC

The wood subfloor moisture content must not exceed the finish flooring MC by more than 4 percentage points for strip flooring narrower than 3 inches.

Wood Subfloor — Plank Flooring (≥3" wide)

MC within 2% of flooring MC

For plank flooring 3 inches or wider, the subfloor MC must not exceed the finish flooring MC by more than 2 percentage points. Wider boards are more sensitive to moisture differentials.

Concrete Subfloor

ASTM F1869 & F2170 testing required

Concrete subfloors must be tested using ASTM F1869 (calcium chloride) for moisture vapor emission rate and/or ASTM F2170 (in-situ relative humidity probes). Never install wood flooring over untested concrete.

Testing Frequency

20+ tests per 1,000 sq ft

Take moisture readings at a minimum of 20 locations per 1,000 sq ft, plus 4 additional readings per 100 sq ft thereafter. Include exterior walls and plumbing areas. Record, date, and photograph all results.
