LVP Installation Problems

Last Updated: July 2026By Efi Eylor · NWFA Certified Inspector

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) is one of the most popular flooring choices, but installation problems are surprisingly common. Because LVP is a floating floor (in most applications), it depends on proper subfloor preparation, adequate expansion gaps, and correct locking technique. When any of these are compromised, problems like buckling, gapping, peaking, and adhesive failure can appear within weeks or months of installation.

Key Takeaways

  • Subfloor flatness must meet manufacturer tolerances (typically 3/16" over 10 feet) — uneven subfloors cause peaking and gapping
  • Inadequate expansion gaps at walls and fixed objects cause the floor to buckle when it expands
  • Incorrect acclimation before installation can lead to post-installation expansion or contraction
  • Glue-down LVP failures often stem from improper adhesive selection or spread rate
  • A certified inspection evaluates subfloor conditions, expansion gaps, installation method, and manufacturer compliance

Frequently Asked Questions

Is SPC flooring really waterproof?

SPC is waterproof at the surface, but moisture beneath the floor can still cause subfloor damage, adhesive failure, and mold. Waterproof does not mean damage-proof.

How much does a vinyl floor inspection cost?

Our Standard Flooring Inspection starts at $550 and covers vinyl, LVP, SPC, laminate, and carpet. Includes visual assessment, moisture testing, and a written report.

Will my warranty cover this?

Manufacturer warranties typically cover product defects but not installation errors. A certified inspection determines whether the failure is a product or installation issue.
